Last year, just before Christmas, I lost my grandmother. I had only just started getting into conversations with her about my family’s history. Now she is gone. I have asked my mother some of the same questions in the past, but her memory isn’t as great as it once was and she doesn’t know her family history that well. Unfortunately, that piece of my family past is forgotten. I only wish that I had been more curious about my family history while growing up. If I had been, I would be able to pass this information down to my children. I’m at the age where my older family members are almost gone and I’m worried that the only family history my kids will know will be what I can remember and, to be honest, that isn’t much.
Recently, I found a website that might help me keep track of these family memories. The website is called Saving Memories Forever. The website was quite easy for me to add photos and just as easy to insert important information. You can also share your stories on Facebook. I have most of my family on Facebook so why not share the memories with them there. You can also find a few great ideas to get you started on their website, one of which is a game that you play when the whole family gets together.
The website also offers a smartphone application, which is free from the iTunes App Store and the Google Play Store. The smartphone app has a series of questions to make recording simple. I’ll admit when I first tried it out I was a little intimidated about what information I should record, however the questions it asks helps tremendously. The questions are laid out in categories by age. I like that I can ask my kids questions about their life according to their age and save that memory forever, so they can share it with their friends and family in the future.
Saving Memories Forever has a free version and a premium subscription. The premium membership gives you access to advanced search capabilities including search by tags. The membership also gives you the ability to download the stories to your computer for backup. You can check out more feature of the premium membership here.
